Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power?

7 Jun

The choice between right and wrong can be hard when one has to make difficult decision. One’s conscience is greatly influenced by upbringing and moral values. Therefore, most people would choose to follow their conscience, to do what is right, no matter what the outcome may be.

Martin Luther King Jr sacrificed his own welfare to help black people. In the past, many black people didn’t have opportunity to get jobs and live a long with the whites. They were discriminated by the whites only because of their skin color. However, a black man, Martin Luther King Jr changed white’s perspective of black people. Instead of using violence against the whites, he rather chose to solve problems in peace. Majority of black people supported Martin Luther King Jr and he had many speeches to show their right of living. He spent his whole life to make peace between the whites and blacks.

Bill Gates followed his heavy heart by giving half of his fortune. Although rich people avoid others However, some of them use their influence in a positive way by following what their heart says to do. For example, Bill Gates chooses to give his entire fortune to charity instead of his children, so that many people could benefit instead of just his kids.

To do what is right provides people with a happiness that does not go away. On the other hand, money and fame only provide temporary happiness, more than likely, bring more pain than happiness. Conscience dominate over money, fame, and power since it gives more powerful motivator.

How can it be solved to “HEAL” the Amazon Forest?

6 Jun

Cattle ranching, conducted by the poor farmers, is another cause for the deforestation. The poor farmers have no choice since they are encouraged to settle on the forest lands under the government land policies. The methane gas that is released from the cow, into the atmosphere, is just like carbon dioxide where it absorbs heat. This heat absorption increase the temperature of the earth and it affects the forest. A better approach to help the rural poor may be promoting permaculture. Permaculture adds a mix of corps to the farmer’s palette that both enables the farmer to diversify his income stream and enhance degraded soils by restoring nutrients. This method will maintain forest systems, soils, and biological diversity at a higher level than the old agricultural approaches.

We are out to help other countries since the destruction of amazon rain forest does not only affect one country, but it affects the whole world. Amazon rain forest contains no less than twenty percent of the world’s oxygen and it suppresses down the carbon dioxide. Brazil do know that it will give negative effects to the whole world if they continue to destruct the rain forest for their economic wealth. However, they cannot stop it because local people living in and around forests must use of whatever resources they can find. Therefore, we should plan out to solve problems that occur on the region; protect the rain forest and benefit Brazil’s economy at the same time.

We will use any possible ways to make Brazil economically wealthy without the use of Amazon rain forest. It may be hard, but we are planning for a long-term project, that someday, we can make a progress of the project.

What are the problems arising from the Amazon Forest?

6 Jun

Save the Amazon Rain forest

Nowadays, tropical rain forests are disappearing globally, impacted by many human activities, therefore it no longer retains full original biodiversity. Rain forests once covered 14% of the earth’s land surface, but now they only cover 6%. The experts estimate that even the following remainder could be consumed in less than 40 years. Furthermore, nearly half of the world’s species of plants and animals could be threatened by the deforestation. The world’s largest rain forest is no exception. Amazon rain forest is on the brink of being turned into desert, by deforestation or use of its depleting natural resources. This will cause catastrophic consequences for the world’s pollution. As a result, Brazil needs to find the solutions to save the amazon rain forest and save the economy of Brazil.

Thousands of logging companies cut down trees in the Amazon rain forest for their timber. They defend themselves by saying that their method of ‘selective’ logging is a safe logging practice where the forest regrows naturally. However, their statement is misleading. “The felling of one ‘selected’ tree, tears down with it climbers, vines, epiphytes and lianas. A large hole is left in the canopy and complete regeneration takes hundreds of years” (Save the rain £forest). It will take more than a hundred year to recover. One solution can be that companies to develop higher yielding timber plantations that will alleviate the pressure of the rain forest. Furthermore, using natural pest and fertilizer, it can reduce the pollution that the agricultural operations make and help moderating biodiversity losses.

* For the next blog, I will be further explaining how can these problems be solved.

Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities?

Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities?

There are many issues that occur in a nation that has to be done by the government. Global recession, relationship between countries, political issues are all what the government can solve out in their hands. However, individuals should be more aware of environmental pollution than the government in order to make their nation, and the world better place.

Destruction of ozone layer is a serious problem that individuals should solve. No matter how much the government pour money to solve issues, the problems will not be concluded unless the individuals fullfil the promise. We, individuals can use electronic cars instead of oil, recycle trashes, and prevent using plastics.

Individuals should be aware of Global warming, and try to follow the ideas that the government give you. Every year, the government comes out with new ideas that will end the issues of Global warming. However, thinking ideas cannot just lead Global warming to its end. For example, they can try not to pollute the world by recycling and collecting trashes.

It is now the time to stop all the problems that affect communities. Not also the government, but the individuals should help what the government is fulfilling.  By the support of the government and the citizens’ reaction will make the world better place.

Reflection: Effects of Secondhand Smoking

28 Feb

Effects of Secondhand smoking

Throughout many researches, people found out that secondhand smoke may affect mental health. They are warning that secondhand smoke has “twice the amount of tar and nicotine than in the smoke inhaled through a filtered cigarette.” Therefore, the person who smokes will be less harm than the nonsmoking partner who is next to him.

Going deep into the health problems, researchers concluded that the passive recipient’s genes are actually being affected by the secondhand cigarette smoke. Once people try to smoke, they experience a decline in lung function and they can never achieve the same level of function as those who never smoked. The secondhand smoke is representing the first molecular steps toward later lung disease.

Furthermore, secondhand smoke is bond to dementia. “The research showed that there were significant increase in the risk of dementia in people over 50 who have been exposed to high levels of secondhand smoke.” A by-product of nicotine, continine harms people’s mental agility, memory and clear thinking. Secondhand-smoke exposure raises the risk of heart disease and stroke, which in turn raise the risk of dementia. Since secondhand smoking gives us harmful effects, people should stop smoking.

Journey of Man Reflection

For the past few weeks in World Geography, Mr. Karch has shown us a video on how humans spread throughout the world. A young geneticist wanted to trace down the genetic and ancestral path of man by looking at blood samples. Blood samples were crucial items because they provided a genetic trail between similar DNA codes.  Relying on genetic markers and geological evidence, he speculated that the human race originated in Africa and moved into Central Asia, India, Europe, Australia, Russia, and the Americas.

After he found out that we used to be Africans of now, he started going around the world trying to persuade and convince people that their ancestors came from Africa. From the start, I could not easily accept the fact that my ancestors had come from Africa because we have different skin color and other physical differences. As I expected, the geneticist had a hard time persuading the people he met in his travels. I believe it is because of cultural and historical differences between regions. Most of them strongly refuse to accept the fact that their ancestors were African because they had their own beliefs and traditions. Furthermore, their culture and traditional legends seemed to hinder the truth of the geneticistʼs revolutionary story. However, when the movie had reached midway, the geneticist strenuously tried to refute the general objections aimed at his studies. For example, the difference in skin color.  In Africa, our ancestors were prone to damage from ultraviolet radiation due to the blistering sun. To adapt in the surroundings, they developed skin that sweat efficiently and became darker as they became full with melanin. However, as people started moving out of Africa, their skin turned paler to absorb more light because other regions have weaker ultraviolet radiation. The people living in the harsh cold environment of northern Russia are also well adapted to their environment. Isolation of these migrants led to variation in their traits such as hair color and aspects of noses. Secondly, the direct DNA that certain people retain. Our family tree could be tracked down to a single man who lived in Africa sixty-thousand years ago, and the closest clue to this manʼs DNA are found in native tribes which are still roaming around the fields of Africa. Also, the documentary introduced a man living in Central Asia who has the marker inherited by over a billion people living in Europe, Asia, America. Once the geneticist analyzed his blood, the results were astounding.

By the end of the video, I personally started to believe that our ancestors originated from Africa. I do not know if it is because of the geneticistʼs arguments, but DNA is something that cannot lie. I felt that this video was very innovative and revolutionary because of the geneticistʼs creative thinking.
